Catalog items and record producers deploy to any ServiceNow instance out of the box — no custom fields, no business rules, no setup. Client scripts arrive correctly linked to their variables, automatically.

Catalog items with onChange Client Scripts deploy to any instance out of the box — no custom fields, no business rules, no setup.

How Variable Linking Works

When you deploy a catalog item with onChange scripts, the deploy API links each script to its variable automatically:

  1. The client script is created on catalog_script_client
  2. A temporary choice entry is seeded so the platform accepts the variable link
  3. cat_variable is set to IO:<variable sys_id> and verified
  4. The temporary choice entry is removed — the link persists

Result: The "Variable name" column in Client Scripts correctly displays the linked variable — with zero instance configuration.

Upgrading from an earlier version? If your instance still has the legacy u_search_keys field and Set_cat_variable business rule, they can stay — deployments work identically with or without them. The connecting user needs rights to write sys_choice (admin, or a role with System Definition > Choice Lists access).

Quick Start:

  1. Connect your ServiceNow instance on the "Connection" tab
  2. Open "Generate Catalog Item" (or "Record Producer")
  3. Describe what you need — or click Builder to turn a rough goal into full requirements
  4. Click Generate — quality checks run automatically and the finished item is loaded into the Deploy tab for you
  5. Pick the Catalog & Category, then Deploy to ServiceNow
